Indigenous Resistance: Flower Comes to Speak

Friday August 10th, 2012 – Prisoner Justice Day

[See bottom of post for list of other PJD 2012 actions and events]

6:00 – 9:00 PM

ArtSpace
378 Aylmer St N.
Peterborough, ON

Sustained Engagements, in partnership with Community Race Relations Committee (CRRC) is honoured to host a local talk with Francine “Flower” Doxtator, grandmother and Haudenosaunee Land Defender, who will be outlining her experiences with Land Reclamation Actions and the subsequent criminalization and targeting she has faced for exercising her treaty
rights.

Flower took part in the walk for “Peace, Respect, and Friendship” on April 28th 2012 to raise awareness of Six Nations Land Rights in Grand River and to bring attention to the broken treaties of the two-row wampum. The OPP claimed her participation in this demonstration was a breach of her conditions, stemming from charges incurred by a confrontation between a group of Elders and infamous racist, Gary McHale (who had the support of the OPP) at Kanonhstaton, the “Protected Place” – a Six Nations reclamation site in Caledonia, in February of 2012. Flower is still not legally allowed to return to Kanonhstaton and in order to avoid jail she had to agree to live with her surety in Toronto – away from her home, her community and friends, her daughter, and her four grandchildren.

This event is being organized in commemoration of Prisoner Justice Day (PJD) on August 10, 2012. PJD marks the day that Eddie Nalon, a man who was incarcerated by the Canadian State, took his own life in 1974 when faced with the ongoing torment of forced segregation. PJD, a now internationally-recognized day of action, has since been earmarked as a day of protest by prisoners, prison abolitionists and their allies in honour of all those who have died unnatural deaths while incarcerated by the Canadian State.

watched by a waxing moon;

thank you everyone who attended, presented and participated in the first ever Nogojiwanong Anarchist Festival! Sites of Possibilities@Sustained Engagements — we look forward to continuing to develop and nurture these relationships within our local community and connecting the struggles regionally.

During this phase, you tend to charge forward with new ideas and impulses, even in the face of resistance. Your primary mission in life lies in actualizing new forms into an objective and concrete existence, as separate from the old way of being. You are fully invested in this sense of purpose, and yet you may also be very aware of the challenge represented by the status quo, since the older forms never will yield without a struggle.

FINAL DAY OF THE FEST

Wow! Absolutely amazing – this weekend has been spectacular. Such insightful and inspiring presentations and people coming together to build stronger networks of resistance! An interesting variety of topics and subject matter have been discussed and hopefully some ongoing dialogues surrounding capacity and community building, accountability and so much more.
Check out the last couple workshops today!

MONDAY MAY 28
Food: FNB Dinner!

12:00 – 1:30 pm FOOD IS POWER – ARM YOURSELF! Presented by Dan Legault @ Sadleir House

Description: Food is Power, it literally is responsible for fueling your body. It harnesses the suns energy and provides us with strength to live. What better way to engage your community and feed change then to understand this powerful dynamic! We will first look at how food is controlled globally, how it has paved the way to the enslavement of society and paved the way for a fossil fuel dependency. Then I will teach people how to create a simple potted garden or a 10×10 garden plot relating how we as individuals and communities can take action by digging in dirt and having less dependence on corporate food scum. Also I will be showing how we can find foods in our backyards and talk about sprouting sprouts and seed protecting (aka seed saving).

Dan Legault is a farmer, a chef, a foodie. From first being diagnosed with food allergies I had entered a world of information that overwhelmed my senses. GMOs, corporate control, government subsidization of empty food, purposeful food degradation in the interest of profit, all things I started to become aware of. Going from being angry at the players of this game, to not having a clue what to do about it, I decided instead to start my own league and play a better more tasty game that engaged everyone under the same common human need… food. When we can all feed ourselves we will truly shed this system.

2:00 – 5:00 pm QUEERING RESISTANCE
Closed for queer identified persons only. Decentralized. @ Sadleir House

5:00 PM FESTIVAL DEBRIEF AND STRATEGY SESSIONS Decentralized @ Confederation Park
